But you can animate sets of PNGs (or Jpegs) with my `Animate' LaTeX package. The embedded animations are JavaScript driven and work in all (linux, win, mac) Adobe Reader versions >= 7. Just convert an existing animated Gif into a set of PNG with `convert' (ImageMagick) and use \animategraphics command of the Animate package.
